One Year on…

One Year Blogiversary

So it’s been a year since I started my blog (or just over, actually; as usual I am a bit behind…).

I set up my blog after a chance conversation with Rosee from Nana Taught Me How who is a friend of my brother’s. When I was speaking to Rosee about her blog I suddenly realised a blog was exactly what I needed.

I didn’t follow any blogs so really had no idea what they were all about. I saw it as a way to deal with the need to share things I had made without hassling my friends. I’m not sure that I thought anyone would actually read it.

It serves all sorts of purposes for me. I get to make things, then I get to photograph them and then I get to write about them. Oh and eat them…

I have always loved baking and would spend hours and hours as a child and a teenager working my way through various recipe books. Then it sort of fell by the wayside and it’s only been over the last few years that I have really started to get back into it.

I am utterly useless at taking photographs of people and avoid being in front of a camera at all costs, but have now discovered I like to take pictures of food, flowers and landscapes. Not sure how I’m going to explain to the kids when they are older why I have hundreds of pictures of cakes but not so many of them… I’m really enjoying learning about photography but am in awe of the ability of other bloggers. Definitely something I need to learn more about.

Flowers…

And writing is something that I am learning about. Again, there are some blogs out there that are absolutely beautifully written. It doesn’t come easily to me but I am enjoying that side of it.

And I have learnt a lot about baking this past year. If I look back at my posts from a year ago I can see that my baking skills are improving all the time. It’s only by looking back that I can see that; I don’t think I would have realised that otherwise. And there is still plenty of room for improvement!

More flowers

Maintaining a blog requires an element of discipline so at some point I decided to post three times a week and stick to it. The only exception has been when I’ve been away and I have used that as an excuse! At times I struggle with finding “something for the blog”. Fae from Fae’s Twist & Tango recently asked me what I do with all the food I make. Good question!

I make quite a lot of cakes and cupcakes for other people, and then there are the things I take to friends’ houses for dinner, coffee, picnics, etc. Some things I make for us or because we are having friends round. All in all though I probably now make and eat far more cake than I should! I am deliberating about whether to go to posting twice a week in order to reduce the cake mountain (and my waistline) a little…

Fruit, for a change, but still no people…

But I think the most amazing thing about blogging, and the one thing I didn’t expect, is the people I have “met”. I follow some truly outstanding blogs: there is an incredible array of shockingly talented people out there and I am thrilled to be able to get to know so many bloggers through their writing, pictures and creations.

And even more amazingly I have people who follow my blog! I truly appreciate the time and effort all of you take to read and respond to my posts. There is so much positive energy and a sense of community out there: it’s very inspiring.

Not food or flowers, but still, no people!

So thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read my posts and interact with me, and for making my blogging experience such a great one so far. Here’s to another year!

  8. Hey Rach, I’ve always thought you were uber cool and your blog this year confirms it. Well done honey 🙂

  9. Happy Blogiversary. It’s only fellow bloggers who know how much time and energy and attention is required to maintain a blog. Many people have started blogs but few have persevered for one year. So to me, this is one hell of an achievement and motivation for all who think the year will never end. I had never been to a food blog before I started blogging, now I know i have interacted with hundreds of food blogs and it has been an eye-opening experience for me too. You do love flowers- don’t you. I love flowers too, in fact I love all plants in general and it was a pleasure seeing all these beautiful images. I wish you a happy and fulfilling Sunday and a wonderful week ahead!

  10. Happy Blogiversary! Keep up the yummy recipes and beautiful pictures.

  11. Happy 1st Anniversary! *\(^o^)/*
It is amazing how much we have in common!
Speaking of waistline… 😉 your response to my question tells what we go through. 😀 ))) I also do relate to how much my presentation knowledge and style has improved since I started 16 months ago, thanks to my fellow bloggers like you.
You have a genuine and quality blog which comes from the heart.
It is amazing how of millions of bloggers on WP, there are only select avatars we see regularly on mutual blogs. I think it is a testament that we all appreciate the ‘person’ who comes across before the quality information.

  12. Happy 1st Anniversary! Your photos are gorgeous as always. I’m truly happy I am a follower. I look forward to reading more.

The waistline issue is something I have big big problems with too. 🙂 Nowadays what I do is I eat a tiny bit to taste the product, then pack up all the rest and lug it to the office or pass to my mum for her to bring to her office. Needless to say, everyone’s getting kind of fed up with cake and cookies. Haha!

  13. What a lovely post! Congratulations on one year of writing, baking and photographing your creations!
Love your pictures…the flowers are beautiful, but the last picture- the glimpse of the bay from the arch is stunning!
